Carl Tatz, the leading expert on studio monitoring, teaches the next generation of recording engineers his field-proven techniques for proper monitor positioning
Why This Matters: Nothing in a control room is more important than accurate monitoring and the rudimentary basics of monitor setup are almost universally ignored by even seasoned pros.
Nashville, TN: Internationally recognized audio education facility The Blackbird Academy is continuing its Carl Tatz Lecture Series on studio monitoring under the auspices of instructor and Co-Director of Education, Professor Mark Rubel. Students are taught proprietary monitor positioning techniques used in Tatz’s TEC Award-winning PhantomFocus™ MixRoom™ designs.
Multi-award-winning studio designer Carl Tatz explains, “In a sense I feel that I am on a mission to help tomorrow’s engineers and producers learn some simple yet invaluable skills of studio monitoring that will greatly enhance their ability to succeed, even shine, as they move into the pro audio workforce.”
Each lecture is preceded by a class visit to one of Tatz’s PhantomFocus MixRooms where students are able to experience a PhantomFocus System (PFS). The lecture is usually scheduled for the following day while the student’s excitement of the visit is still fresh in their minds.
“From common sense procedures to unique protocols, our students at The Blackbird Academy are fortunate to get to learn about studio monitoring from Carl Tatz. I first take them to listen at The Blue Grotto recording studio, which blows their minds. Once they’ve had the PFS experience of listening in that control room, they have a hundred questions, and all want a PhantomFocus™ MixRoom™,” remarked Rubel.
