Legendary Engineer/Producer Ken Scott Enveloped by the PhantomFocus™ System
— Engineer for The Beatles and producer/engineer for Jeff Beck, David Bowie and Supertramp has monitoring epiphany with Carl Tatz Design tuning protocol - the PhantomFocus™ System —
Nashville, TN: "For the longest time I would espouse the use of the 7 foot tall, half-ton behemoths, known as Cadac speakers. I had doubts whether I would ever again hear the clarity and power from those speakers that I used to mix albums like Supertramp's Crime Of The Century or Stanley Clarke's Journey To Love et al. Those doubts have finally been erased after hearing the near field PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) from Carl Tatz Design. At last something new that compares to the best of the past," comments engineer/producer Ken Scott about the new generation PhantomFocus™ System (PFS).
Engineer and prolfic author Bobby Owsinski who was also on hand and who is co-writing the soon to be released book, Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust with Scott explains, "This is is high praise indeed. Ken is not impressed with ANY speaker system. He always uses the main soffit monitors in any room he works in and NEVER uses near fields. To have him so satisfied with the PFS is significant."
"The PhantomFocus System is a new genre in monitoring where near fields become mains. In other words, you have the intimacy of your choice of near fields but the frequency response of mains - the best of both worlds" says Carl Tatz, principal of Carl Tatz Design LLC and creator of the PhantomFocus™ System (PFS). "It was a real thrill for me to throw up the Beatles' "Blackbird" which Ken had mixed and I had downloaded for the occasion, and be able to listen to it microscopically with him on the PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) - hard to explain what that was like."
Both Ken And Bobby had lots of questions about the PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) that long time PFS user and Nashville iconic engineer Bob Bullock, who was also in attendance, was happy to answer. "Carl's work is clearly beyond what anyone else has done or is doing. I've been spoiled for a long time and I'm looking forward to upgrading to the latest PFS technology in my home mix room soon".
Owsinski sums up his experience by admitting, "After hearing so much about the PFS from people who's ears I trust, I was anxious to hear the system for myself. Sure enough, the PFS was so far beyond my expectations that it's difficult to express. It has unparalleled pinpoint stereo imagery and a depth of field that has to be heard to be believed in both the near field and mid field PFSs. Finally, it's now possible to really hear all those sonic layers that you take so much time building."
In related news, Ken Scott has recently released a double DVD set of instructional videos and world class drum samples from some of the worlds top rock and jazz drummers called EpiK DrumS EDU.
About the PhantomFocus™ System
Once the basic acoustic treatment has been accomplished, Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ Monitor System offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest they may perceive it to be. The PhantomFocus System allows their monitors of choice to perform accurately at a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response with pinpoint imaging in an almost holographic sweet spot — this enables their mixes to travel anywhere with a new level of sonic accuracy. There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, some of which may include phase and laser alignment, damping, isolation mounts, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to their room’s primary axial modes, proprietary speaker distance and angle, crossover points for pass filtering, and finally parametric equalization. Hardware can include monitor stands, concrete, sorbothane and other isolation materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer system, custom crossover, parametric equalizers and the monitors themselves (passive or active). The evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer. Carl Tatz Design can install the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms or in studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
