ABOUT CARL TATZ DESIGN
Carl Tatz Biography
Carl Tatz is the award-winning studio designer and principal of Nashville-based Carl Tatz Design LLC. Drawing upon his thirty plus years of experience as a GRAMMY®-nominated engineer/producer, award-winning commercial studio owner (Recording Arts) and seven-time TEC Award nominee and one time winner, he has shared his unique acoustic approach in lectures and on panels at such esteemed venues as Berklee College of Music, SAE, the Art Institutes, Mix Nashville, Blackbird Academy returning lecturer, and AES and NAMM events. His work encompasses commercial, educational and in particular, personal recording studio and private screening room design for many high profile engineers, producers, and artists. Carl is also noted as the creator of the acclaimed PhantomFocus™ System and related PFM Precision Monitoring Instruments that is revolutionizing the control rooms of engineer/producers across the country. These products render unprecedented performance and imaging with full frequency accuracy using any brand of monitors including the PhantomFocus PFM 1000 Monitors, whether in a bedroom studio or million-dollar control room with equal results, and whether of his design or others.
Carl Tatz brings a wide-ranging background in many facets of entertainment, acoustics and customer service to Carl Tatz Design. He has had careers as a musician, composer, recording engineer, and record producer and was the maitre d’ of Julian’s, Nashville’s legendary four-star restaurant. He also owned Recording Arts, a world-class music recording facility in Nashville that was named one of the “Great Studios Of the World” by Mix Magazine in 1995 after garnishing multiple gold and platinum records. The studio was purchased by recording artist Sheryl Crow in 2003. Tatz was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award in 1999 for his production of Jack Jones’ Tribute To Tony Bennett LP.
Introduced to the business end of cinema at an early age, Carl’s father owned and operated a drive-in theater outside of his home town of Providence, RI, where he worked in the concession stand, sometimes ran the merry-go-round and hung out in the projection booth. The theater was uniquely equipped with 70-mm Todd-A-O projectors, unheard of for a drive-in, as he watched classics like Oklahoma”, “South Pacific,” “Carrousel,” “West Side Story” and “Lawrence Of Arabia” on “The largest screen in the East”.
While enjoying nearly two decades as a recording industry professional and studying with some of the top acoustic minds in the country, Carl began designing monitor systems and studios, both commercial and private, and quickly evolved into home screening room design inspired by the passion of his childhood experiences.
Today as Carl travels about the country working on various projects, he knows that understanding the client’s vision is paramount. “You cannot create something as intimate as a personal recording studio or home screening room without understanding how it fits in with the client’s lifestyle,” he explains. “A properly designed studio and especially a monitor system will have the most profound impact imaginable on those who use it so it becomes my quest to help them realize that this is going to be better than they think possible. In the same token, a home screening room is an emotional choice because it brings the world into the home — I want to know how the client sees the world. My ultimate goal is to help them see it better.”
